PIF will be delighted as Newcastle United feature in Opta's new global power rankings

New Opta statistics have favoured Newcastle United after their brilliant season which included a Carabao Cup win and Champions League qualification.

It was without a doubt the best season in living memory for many fans. The agonising wait for a trophy was ended when Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored at Wembley Stadium to help the Magpies win the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle United fans lined the streets of the city to get a glimpse of the trophy. It was reported that over 300,000 Newcastle fans were in the city centre to hail the players as the heroes they are.

At full-time, Arne Slot said Dan Burn’s goal was unlike anything he had seen. The towering defender enjoyed a sensational week which saw him called up to the England squad, score at Wembley to help win a trophy and make his international debut.

Alan Shearer loved the scenes at the trophy parade, something he experienced as a player despite being on the losing side of multiple FA Cup finals. Champions League qualification was a welcome bonus, but the Carabao Cup win ensured the 2024/25 campaign will live long in the memory.

With the success recognised elsewhere, Opta have rewarded Newcastle by ranking them among the best teams in the world.

Newcastle United placed 10th in Opta Global Power Rankings

If last season was anything to go by, then the 2025/26 season will be something special. Newcastle have signed Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, and there is a lot more transfer business to be done with less than two months left in the window.

Newcastle want to be competitive in the Champions League next season, but new signings are needed to help achieve that.

Still, Newcastle’s achievements from last season have not gone unnoticed, and Opta have ranked them 10th in the Global Power Rankings, effectively naming them the 10th best team in the world. PSG have unsurprisingly taken the top spot in the rankings thanks to their recent dominance and Champions League win. The French giants look set to dominate football for the next few years with Luis Enrique managing a young and talented squad.

The ranking system assigns an ability score to over 10,000 men’s domestic teams on a scale of zero and 100, with zero being the worst-ranked team and 100 being the best in the world.

Newcastle scored an impressive 94.73, putting them behind other Premier League teams like Aston Villa, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

PIF will be very pleased with Newcastle United’s Opta ranking

It comes as no surprise PIF are rallying for success at Newcastle. A lot of money has already been put into the club, and even more is expected to be pumped into the club over the next few years.

Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan promised more trophies after the Carabao Cup win. They want to be the best in the world, and will now expect more silverware in the next couple of seasons.

As well as work to make improvements on the pitch, PIF are throwing money at developments off it. Plans for Newcastle’s new stadium are expected any day now, and plans have already been put in place for a new training ground to be built away from Darsley Park.

Additionally, while a new training ground is being built, Newcastle have confirmed plans to upgrade Darsley Park for the thriving academy.
