Kyle Walker says Man City let a player go for free in 2022 who was equal to Vincent Kompany

Kyle Walker’s legendary Manchester City career has come to an end.

The defender spent the last eight years at the Etihad Stadium, and during that time, the 35-year-old won everything at Man City, while many now view Walker as the best right-back in the history of the Premier League.

Walker recently completed a transfer to Burnley and has been reflecting on his career in Manchester ever since, with the Man City legend recently praising Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

That has not stopped, as the defender has now stated that Man City once had a player who was just as good a leader as Vincent Kompany.

Fernandinho was just as good a leader as Vincent Kompany

Kompany is one of the greatest players to ever play for Man City, and for many fans of the Manchester club, the Belgian epitomised what it meant to be a leader

When asked to build the perfect footballer by Burnley’s TikTok account, Walker selected Fernandinho for the leadership category, before adding Kompany, as he struggled to separate his former teammates.

When Kompany left Man City in 2019, the armband was passed on to David Silva, but when the Spaniard also departed, Fernandinho would take up the role ahead of his departure in 2022.

It is not a surprise that Walker named the Brazilian, as Fernandinho was one of the best players Txiki Begiristain ever brought to Manchester.

Gary Neville was also a big fan of Fernandinho, but the compliment Walker has just given the former midfielder is a big one, considering how highly regarded Kompany was at Man City.

Kyle Walker makes surprise Erling Haaland claim

While praising Fernandinho, Walker also made a surprising claim about Erling Haaland, as the right-back stated that the Norwegian was the best header of a ball he has ever seen.

Heading is not one of the striker’s main strengths, despite his height, and was even one of his weaknesses upon joining City during the summer of 2022.

Kompany may have been a better shout for this category, or even Harry Kane, who Walker played alongside with both Tottenham and England.

The Norwegian superstar will no doubt take the compliment, though, and it may prove correct over time, as the 24-year-old continues to work on that part of his game over the coming years.
