Former Eagles defender kicks off weekend with career-deciding statement

It's the end of an era for a one-time Philadelphia Eagles.

Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh took to social media to announce that he was retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons. He last played in the NFL in 2022 with the Eagles, but is looking to use his platform to start the next chapter of his life.

"I left it all on the field, and now I’m stepping away with peace and gratitude.

Because I’ve been preparing for this moment for years. Football was my passion, but it was never my endgame.

My next season is about impact, purpose, and legacy. About helping others build wealth, lead with intention, and create lasting freedom.

I’ve lived. I’ve learned. I’ve built. I’ve failed. I’ve succeeded. And now I want to share what I’ve learned; especially with athletes, entrepreneurs, and young people navigating life and money.

That’s why I created the No Free Lunch podcast. It’s about real conversations, real strategy, and real education. Because freedom doesn’t come from fame, it comes from knowledge and how you move."

July 12, 2024 was the hardest day of my life.

It’s the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself.

He wasn’t just a dad. He was my idol, my coach, and my anchor.

He taught me what it meant to… pic.twitter.com/WkefQaDrsQ

How special was Suh when he played in the NFL?

Suh was a former second-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2010 and came out of the gates strong with a career-high 10 sacks in his rookie season. He would be selected to the Pro Bowl, a first-team All-Pro, and won Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The Lions had him on the team through 2014 as he made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team three more times before playing for the Miami Dolphins for three years. He made another Pro Bowl and All-Pro with the Dolphins in 2016.

Suh played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2018 before spending three seasons after that with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he won a Super Bowl title.

His final season came in 2022 with the Eagles, where he was signed midway through the season, along with Linval Joseph, in the same week to add some talent to the defensive line. Suh played in eight regular-season games and made 10 tackles, two quarterback hits, and one sack. He helped the Eagles make the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Most people won't remember Suh for his time in Philadelphia, but he did make an impact on the Eagles in that 2022 season. He gave Philly a pass-rushing tackle who can clog up the middle of the line as well. Suh and Joseph helped solve the tackle issues with the Eagles that helped them get within a game of a Super Bowl title.

Suh's aggressiveness and sometimes borderline dirty plays will most likely be remembered, but he was one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL for a long time. He has the resume to keep him in the conversation for a potential Hall of Fame spot.
