Manchester United have been handed a major blow, as first-choice keeper Andre Onana has suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season training.
The injury’s been picked up, frustratingly, in United’s first week back after the summer break, with Ruben Amorim having hoped to hit the round running on their return.
The Portuguese manager and his coaching staff developed personalised conditioning plans for all his senior and academy squad players who could be set for a Premier League outing this season to try and avoid injuries.

However, Onana is now set to miss 6 to 8 weeks due to the injury, ruling him out of all the club’s pre-season games, including their tour of America, and potentially the first few games of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If the estimated return date is around the eight-week mark, this would see Onana miss United’s opening home fixture against Arsenal, their away trip to Fulham and their match-up with newly promoted Burnley at Old Trafford.
Needless to say, a Premier League opening fixture at home to Arsenal isn’t the type of game you want to be going into without your first-choice keeper, especially if they do land the signing of Viktor Gyokeres.
As such, Amorim is now weighing up whether he hands his back-up keeper, Altay Bayindir, a shot in goal, or if he pushes the club to turn to the market and sign a new replacement for Andre Onana.

United have been front-runners for both Botafogo’s John Victor and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, with both clubs looking for replacement options should they lose their first-choice keepers.
However, if United want to make a new signing to replace the Cameroon international effectively, it will need to happen over the next week, for them to arrive in time to make the flight to America in just over a weeks time.
