Bills mailbag: It's almost time to pack for training camp

It’s the heat of the summer, and Jay Skurski is on vacation. So are many of you, judging by the laid-back (I say this as a compliment) questions this week. Let’s get to the mailbag.

SeanyBoy asks: Is there any free agent that you think the Bills will bring in for camp?

Katherine: I would not be surprised if they stay put for the start of camp, but there are a few names I find intriguing. Linebacker Kyzir White, safety Julian Blackmon and guard Brandon Scherff are worth throwing spaghetti at the wall. The Bills are pretty deep around the roster, but I am curious about the depth at linebacker if starters Matt Milano or Terrel Bernard were to get injured during camp.

Zach Sheldon asks: What do you think is the biggest fan misconception around the team?

Katherine: Fun question! Not to paint the fanbase with too large a brush, I think there is a notable (audible) portion that wants Sean McDermott gone, believing he can’t get the Bills over the hump. I’ll push back on that – I think McDermott can do it. Obviously, that opinion will linger – and maybe even spread – for as long as it takes McDermott to win a coveted Super Bowl. And yes, there have been coaching miscues in the playoffs along the way. Still, winning in this league is hard, and I think McDermott puts this team in the best position to do so.

Buffalo Bills position preview: Who secures starting safety role?

Entering his seventh season, Taylor Rapp’s role as a starting safety is secure, but there’s always room to grow. And there’s time to help those around him.

Ed Helinski asks: With Bills training camp right around the corner, what dining spots are you considering during the grind in Rochester? Which ones might have already piqued your interest? Please do tell us.

Eddy Tabone asks: What are your first stops around town after getting settled in the dorms?

Katherine: Pittsford Dairy is already calling my name. Sean McDermott is correct in his praise of the ice cream shop. Umai Revolving Sushi also is important to me due to the advanced technology of the sushi rotating around the restaurant. I like going to Bar-Bill East with visiting reporters. And, I am excited to check out Easy Sailor Tiki. Some of you may know how ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg and I try to visit a tiki bar during every away game in the opposing city. We are working on an intense ranking system, and I’m giddy to see how Easy Sailor stacks up against some fierce competition. And, of course, I will be going to Marge’s Lakeside Inn.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen models a blue helmet during the Blue and Red practice at Highmark Stadium in 2023. Harry Scull Jr., Buffalo News

Adam Zuckerman asks: Why does the Bills brass seem so dead-set against alternate/throwback uniforms in general and, specifically, the 90s "Super Bowl era" uniforms with red helmets. Any insight into this? The final year of old Highmark/The Ralph calls for these!

Katherine: I agree that the final year merits historic uniforms. As of the spring league meetings, teams are now permitted to wear their throwback or alternate jerseys up to four times in a 17-game regular season. The previous rule was three. I can’t say why the Bills have shied from the red helmets – we all know Josh Allen loves to toy with fans’ feelings with alternates during training camp with one – but this would be the year to re-up them. I am also ready to see the Rivalries uniforms, which are part of a new program with Nike similar to MLB’s City Connect uniforms. This would be a great opportunity for something flashy. And what merchandise executive says no to more sales?

Buffalo Bills position preview: Linebackers still have more to prove

Linebacker Matt Milano, who turns 31 this month, needs to show what he still can do not only for the Bills, but for his own career.

Lazytown716 asks: What Bills player would you pick to swag up your dorm room for training camp? Who meets the @kfitz134 interior decor style standard?

Katherine: A fascinating investigation. My dorm room has shark sheets and a Barbie comforter with a Space Jam lamp, so the interior design really has a high standard. However, I can always use more swag, especially from someone in a different tax bracket than me. I will go with A.J. Epenesa and Dion Dawkins. I think they’ll get really creative with it. Epenesa is vibey – maybe we’ll bring the tiki theme inside Dorsey Hall (yes, it’s called that) – and Dawkins is splashy. I foresee a tie-dye banner in my future.

ThighDoctor asks: Can you interview Billy Buffalo?

Katherine: Yes, but he is unable to speak back to me, so I will be interpreting his gestures. Perhaps better material for a video interview than a written piece.

Thanks for reading! Enjoy the last bits of July until camp starts.
