A long-serving Aston Villa star is attracting interest from Everton, according to reports
Aston Villa captain John McGinn is reported to be the subject of strong interest from Premier League rivals Everton as they continue to rebuild their squad under David Moyes.
Everton are preparing for an exciting era under new owners in the Friekdin Group, a new ground in the Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, with a familar face in Moyes pulling the strings as he hopes to return the club to his it’s former heights.
McGinn, a 77-time Scottish international, has been a key part of the setup at Villa Park since joining the club from Scottish Premiership side Hibs in 2018, he ranks right up there with some of the club’s best pieces of business from the last decade and is a real leader in the dressing room.
McGinn helped Aston Villa reach the Premier League by winning the Championship play-offs and has since helped the Lions not only establish themselves as top-flight regulars but also reach heights such as the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference and an FA Cup semi-final.
He’s racked up 285 appearances in total in a Villa shirt and has captained the club since 2022 when he took the armband of Tyrone Mings. McGinn has played under four different managers in the West Midlands and impressed last season with four goals and six assists from 49 matches, with only goal difference separating Villa from a second consecutive Champions League finish.
Everton consider shock John McGinn swoop
The Athletic reports Everton have registered an interest in John McGinn. Fellow Scotsman David Moyes is believed to be a huge fan of the midfielder and is in the market for replacements for the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure and Idrissa Gueye after both players opted against signing contract extensions.
McGinn, 30, still has two years remaining on his contract at Aston Villa and is understood to be a player that still has a big part to play in the eyes of Unai Emery.
Birmingham World understands the West Midlands outfit will do everything they can to try and retain McGinn despite the interest at this stage.
Former Aston Villa scout makes intriguing John McGinn admission
Bryan King, a former goalkeeper and football manager, who enjoyed spells as a scout for both Aston Villa and Everton before retiring fully in 2017, believes the time could be right for McGinn to leave Villa Park for Everton.
He told Aston Villa news: This is a player I’d imagine David Moyes would be interested in.
“He reminds me of a Leon Osman, who was central to Moyes during his first spell with Everton. McGinn comes into that category for me.
“I think if a satisfactory offer were made, Villa would be prepared to sell McGinn. He’s 30 now, two years left on his contract. If they wait any longer, his value will decrease.
“He had a good season; this is probably the right time to move on.”
