Wilt Chamberlain supposedly set the single-game scoring record in the NBA with 100 points against the New York Knicks. Where is the video? Why aren’t there any highlights?
Great question. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you must but I would be lying if I said I didn’t have my doubts!
Chamberlain played in the NBA from 1959-1973 with the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers after a brief stint with the Harlem Globetrotters. He is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all-time if not the greatest center in history.
There is no way to deny Chamberlain’s greatness. The 7-footer scored 31,419 points with 23,924 rebounds and 4,643 assists. He was a four-time MVP, seven-time scoring champion, 11-time rebounding champion, 13-time All-Star, and two-time NBA champion. His jersey is retired by all of his former teams.
Wilt Chamberlain’s highlight tapes are electric. I could watch him hoop for hours.
However, there is one specific game that was not captured on camera.
Did Wilt Chamberlain score 100 points in a single game?
Chamberlain became the only player in NBA history to score 100 points in a single game. Philadelphia beat New York 169-147.
There is a super famous photo (that I do not own the rights to and cannot legally post here) of Wilt Chamberlain holding a piece of paper with the number 100 written out in black marker. You know the one.
Because the NBA was not super popular at the time, there were no official photographers in attendance at the game. The photo was captured by a fan, who just so happened to be a professional photographer. There is no video. So how do we know that it really happened?
Technically speaking, we don’t! There is no visual evidence. And yet, I frequently come across various highlight videos on social media from when Chamberlain was in high school. For example:
Now, excuse me while I put on my tinfoil hat. We have video of Wilt Chamberlain in high school but we do not have video of his 100-point game. All we have is one single photo of a janky piece of paper.
I don’t want to speak ill of the dead, but I am not entirely convinced it happened. How do we know he scored exactly 100? Kobe Bryant is my single-game scoring record holder. I’m just saying…
