Simon Johnson of The Athletic confirmed this week that Chelsea are monitoring Ethan Nwaneri’s situation at Arsenal, having previously tried to sign the youngster in 2023.

But Johnson adds that whilst contract extension talks are yet to bear fruit, Arsenal are optimistic that an agreement will be reached.

Ed Aarons confirms for The Guardian that Arsenal are believed to be confident that Nwaneri will sign, in spite of interest from both Chelsea and also some German clubs.

As it stands, Nwaneri’s contract is set to expire in 2026, so this is one of the more urgent situations the club need to address.

Negotiations have already been somewhat disrupted this summer by Nwaneri’s participation in the u21 European Championships, and James McNicholas recently reported for The Athletic that talks are at a delicate stage.

Whilst McNicholas reports that the player wants to stay, he’s prioritising his development. He’ll want assurances he’s best served remaining where he is.

A report from The Telegraph suggests Chelsea did try to include Nwaneri in discussions over Noni Madueke, but the Gunners rejected that proposal and have since agreed a deal to sign the Blues winger.
