Leeds United could be about to make a final attempt to sign Nikola Krstovic as they look to add to their attacking options.

The Lecce frontman has been drawing plenty of attention in Serie A from the likes of Roma and Atalanta, but the Whites are keen to hand him the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

Leeds recently received a boost regarding Krstovic, as Roma have decided to put their pursuit of him on the back burner, as they instead chase a deal to sign Evan Ferguson.

Daniel Farke’s side have already made four signings so far this summer, but they simply must strengthen their attack if they are to have hope of achieving survival next term.

A second Leeds move for Krstovic can’t be ruled out

Leeds’ initial attempt to sign Krstovic failed due to the 25-year-old’s desire to move to Roma, but the landscape has since changed.

Lecce have now upped the asking price to £34.4million, and interest from the Italian capital has waned slightly.

Both Roma and Atalanta are now believed to be evaluating other potential options, according to La Gazzetta Dello Mezzogiorno (11 July).

The Italian outlet also understands that the possibility of Leeds returning with a second attempt to land Krstovic cannot be ruled out, despite his previous reluctance to move to the Premier League.

The 49ers have seemingly left the door open for them to make one final attempt to land Krstovic, but if they opt to do that and get knocked back once more, then they should admit defeat and turn their attention elsewhere.

Krstovic is not what Leeds need

A striker is sure to be one of the top priorities at Elland Road this summer, amid concerns about the strength in depth of the current options at the top of the pitch.

Joel Piroe is prolific at Championship level, but totally unproven in the Premier League, and as a result, what Farke needs is a frontman who has a proven goal record in the top flight, or at the very least, in another top European league.

Krstovic notched just 11 goals in Serie A last time out and appears to be a striker who would perhaps be more of a workhorse than an out-and-out finisher.

The Whites could well live or die by the 49ers’ ability to bring in the right striker next term, and Krstovic would be a hugely expensive gamble at almost £35m.
