PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Three-time Pro Bowler and former Arizona Cardinals tackle Luis Sharpe has died at the age of 65, the team announced Saturday.
“Throughout his lengthy and accomplished career with the Cardinals, Luis Sharpe exhibited an uncommon type of strength and toughness that made him so successful as a player,” said Michael Bidwell, the team’s owner. “Admirably, he would later demonstrate those same traits in dealing with the personal challenges he faced when his career was over. We send our deepest condolences to all of those who loved Luis, in particular his family and former teammates.”
He was a tackle who played his 13 season with the Cardinals from 1982-1994. He also played college football for UCLA and was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round (16th overall) in the 1982 NFL Draft.
According to the team, Sharpe spent his final years at a Detroit sobriety clinic and helping former NFL players with their health.
Sharpe also appeared on The Extra Point podcast with Arizona’s Family to talk about his sobriety journey.
