Manchester United’s lack of player sales this transfer window has raised concerns.
The Red Devils, who boast a rich history of success, recorded two of their worst ever campaigns in the Premier League in their last two back-to-back seasons. The 2024/25 season marked their lowest ever points tally, with just 42 on the board - the same amount as Wolves who were tipped to be relegated earlier in the term.
Reports leading up to the summer transfer window suggested United were open to selling pretty much their entire squad. After an enormously disappointing season, the majority of players had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
However, the Red Devils are yet to make a sale and have so far only bid farewell to free agents. Stan Collymore has raised some alarm bells over their slow approach to the market.
Man United lack of sales a worry
Despite some players voicing their desire to leave Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim ruling them out of his plans, the club are yet to cash in.
Former England international Stan Collymore has raised his concerns over United’s slow approach to the window and fears for their upcoming season.
“I worry that Man United haven’t got rid of players. I think that players are going to have to turn up to pre-season eventually. And no matter how much players like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho want to leave, they will need to turn up for pre-season if they are still contracted to the club,” he told CaughtOffside for his latest column.
“I think that Man United need to have a clean slate, so it is worrying that they haven’t got rid of anybody that they want to get rid of yet.
“By this time next week, they may get it all right, get rid of four or five players and bring two or three in. But at the moment, I think that the early optimism of Man United fans saying that it was still one of the clubs to go to is starting to decline.”
Concerns raised over Man United’s upcoming season
United have snapped up the impressive Matheus Cunha and are also working on bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, but Collymore isn’t reading too much into these early deals.
The ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa forward has warned that unless they start kicking their business up a gear soon, they could be looking at an uphill climb to be ready for the 2025/26 season.
“Yes, guys like Cunha and Mbeumo have said that they only want to go to Man United. But while there are agents sniffing around and touting someone like Mbeumo to another club because talks are running on for so long,” Collymore continued.
“So Manchester United need to be very careful and start to get some of these deals over the line, both incoming and outgoing. Otherwise, I can see it being a very, very tricky summer transfer window for them. And as a consequence, a potentially big question mark as to how the season will pan out for them.”
