Youngster to join Real Sociedad after Arsenal exit

Former Arsenal academy youngster Zac Shuaib is set to join La Liga club Real Sociedad following a successful trial, according to a report.

Alex Howell reports for the BBC that Zac Shuaib is set to sign for Real Sociedad following his departure from Arsenal this summer.

Shuaib had been on a scholarship contract with Arsenal for the last couple of seasons, but the Gunners opted not to offer him a professional deal. As a result, he was included on their list of departing players published in June.

That wasn’t a surprise, with Shuaib already having spent time with Brighton on a trial basis. But rather than joining the Seagulls, the midfielder is making a move to Spain.

Howell reports that Shuaib held a trial with Real Sociedad as well, having a personal connection with the region as his mother’s family are Basque.

The player’s grandparents reportedly dreamed he’d end up playing for Sociedad, the club they support. That dream may well be fulfilled sooner than they might have expected.

Now a free agent, Shuaib can complete a permanent move to the side as soon as the details are sorted. Arsenal are technically due compensation for their time training the youngster in their academy, but Howell writes that sources say they waived that compensation.

Shuaib made four appearances for the Arsenal u18s in his final campaign for the club, having made six in 2023/24. The player’s limited minutes meant a summer departure was always likely, but a move to Real Sociedad is a strong one that should ensure he lands on his feet.
