Manchester United have confirmed that they will not trigger the buy-back clause for Real Madrid-bound Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras. Madrid are closing in on a deal to sign the 22-year-old from the Portuguese club to bolster their defence this summer.
Carreras enjoyed a fantastic spell at Benfica after joining them in the summer of 2024, permanently after a loan spell. The United Academy product made steep progress by developing himself through multiple loan moves, gaining a lot of first-team experience.
However, Man United’s preference to use experienced players in defence over Carreras made the young Spaniard leave the Manchester club. United had Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw in their ranks at that time, despite their unfortunate luck with persistent injuries.

Fabrizio Romano used his X account to reveal that United will not trigger the buy-back clause as Real closes in on signing Carreras from Benfica this summer. The Spanish giant are ready to pay €50m in instalments for the 22-year-old left-back to secure the deal.
Following Erik ten Hag’s sacking, the new manager, Ruben Amorim, signed Patrick Dorgu to bolster the team’s left wing-back position. With the left side of the defence possessing multiple options, the former Sporting CP boss doesn’t need any reinforcement there.
United will bag more than £7m due to the 20% sell-on clause they put when Benfica bought Carreras in 2024. Every income counts at the moment, as the Red Devils are facing a lot of financial pressure right now.
Furthermore, United do need reinforcement in many other positions this summer after enduring a horrible season, finishing in 15th place. The current Man United squad has failed to adjust to Amorim’s tactical formation of 3-4-2-1, along with his philosophical demands.
At this point, Amorim is targeting quality over quantity and needs to sign players according to the team’s needs.
