It’s set to be a hugely emotional day as Liverpool gets its pre-season schedule underway against Championship side Preston later.
The Reds make the short journey to Deepdale for their first game since the tragic news of Diogo Jota’s death, with the Portugal international having died in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva. Tributes have been flowing in ever since, with Liverpool’s players and staff accompanying Jota’s wife Rute as they laid flowers at Anfield on Friday.
The club has confirmed Jota’s No. 20 jersey will now be retired at all levels at the club, and further tributes are set to be paid ahead of kick-off today.
A rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone will be sung before the game, with the hosts laying a wreath in front of the traveling supporters, while a special matchday program honoring Jota and his brother will be available for free for supporters.
Those not able to make it to Deepdale will be able to watch the tributes and the action from home, with the game set to be broadcast for free in the UK.
The game will be shown live on ITV1, with coverage getting underway 20 minutes before kick-off at 2:40 p.m. UK time (9:40 a.m. Eastern time and 6:40 a.m. Pacific time in the U.S.). The decision to televise Liverpool’s opening pre-season game was made before Jota and Silva’s tragic passing.

The game will also be available to be streamed live for free on ITVX, which just requires an email address to sign up to if you’re in the UK.
As usual during pre-season, Liverpool’s official channels will also be showing the game live, with coverage getting underway for the club’s All Red Full and All Red Video members from 2:15 p.m. UK time (9:15 a.m. Eastern time and 6:15 a.m. Pacific time in the US).
All Red Video is actually available for free for the first month to new members, meaning fans who sign up this month will be able to watch all of Liverpool’s pre-season games for free this summer.
