Leeds United snubbed by £7.8m ex-Derby star – Chooses Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce

Leeds United are aware that they will need an overhaul of their squad to give themselves a fighting chance of survival in the Premier League next season. The Whites have already done some decent business, but they have also lost out on a few key targets.

The Yorkshire giants have brought in four new faces since winning the Championship and earning promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season. Leeds have added depth and numbers to their defence and attack ahead of the new season.

They are expected to splash the cash on a striker, a number 10, a winger and a top goalkeeper before the transfer window slams shut, but the window has also been about the club losing out on a few key targets.

Losing two key midfield options to Sunderland dominated the headlines earlier in the window, but Leeds have also missed out on a key defender to the charms of Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho.

Leeds wanted to sign ex-Derby County left-back Archie Brown

A product of the Derby County academy, the left-back has spent time in Switzerland and Belgium before joining Fenerbahce over the weekend.

However, according to LeedsUnited.News, Leeds sporting director Adam Underwood is an admirer of Brown and wanted to bring him back to England this summer.

Leeds were keen to secure a deal to sign the left-back earlier in the window, but Brown chose to move to Turkey and work under Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

The Turkish giants agreed to pay a fee of £7.8m to Gent to take him to Istanbul earlier in the summer transfer window.

Leeds have signed Gabriel Gudmundsson as the replacement for Junior Firpo, who left the club on a free transfer at the end of last season.

Brown would have been a terrific signing at left-back

Brown has proven himself in the Belgian League and has now earned a move to Fenerbahce, who are a big name in Turkish football, managed by an iconic coach.

He would have been a good signing for Leeds as well, given what he brings to the table as an attacking full-back.

Brown would have fitted perfectly into Daniel Farke’s system, given his ability to carry the ball from defence to attack and his ability to find his teammates with precision forward passes.

Gudmundsson could turn out to be a solid signing for the Whites, but in Brown, Leeds would have found the perfect replacement for Firpo in the team.

The Englishman also would not have needed much time to get used to playing in England, given his history at Derby County and could have been the ideal signing for the Whites this summer.
