Sunderland gem Chris Rigg has been a long-term target for Everton.

The 18-year-old is seen as one of the best upcoming players in the country and helped Sunderland win promotion to the Premier League last season.

Everton were linked with Rigg earlier this year after he once again impressed in the Championship.

Now, the transfer saga has taken a twist as David Moyes looks to add more depth to his Everton squad.

Sunderland to offer Rigg a new contract

In late April, it was said that both Everton and Arsenal were pursuing Rigg as they looked to secure his signature this summer.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

However, Sunderland are now looking to deter potential suitors by offering the youngster a new deal, according to Alan Nixon’s patreon (13 July).

Rigg, who is described in the report as a “sensation”, is currently on £20k-a-week, but the Black Cats are prepared to nearly double this wage, making him one of the best-paid youngsters in the top-flight.

This is despite Regis Le Bris bringing in multiple new signings in midfield this summer, which could lead to the youngster “fighting” for a place in the team. However, he is still expected to feature heavily.

Everton and West Ham are said to be watching developments, as interest in Rigg remains high.

Everton should make Rigg offer before contract is signed

If Rigg does sign a new deal at Sunderland this summer, then Everton are extremely unlikely to sign the midfielder this season.

This could be a catastrophic mistake by the Toffees. If Rigg performs well at Sunderland in the Premier League, his value will only go up, and more clubs will likely join the race.

Rigg has had an excellent start to his career

Therefore, this could be Everton’s last chance to sign the 18-year-old, who clearly has bundles of potential.

Moyes should look to make an offer for Rigg and attempt to sway his head before he signs a new deal.

The midfielder could be a transformative player at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and is exactly the type of player that the Scotsman could build a team around.
