Sunderland set to make move for Southampton star

Southampton are gearing up for another stint in the Championship following a swift relegation from the Premier League. The Saints endured a dismal 2024/25 season, managing just 12 points from 38 matches.

Now, with that chapter closed, the focus shifts to the future under the guidance of exciting new manager Will Still. Despite the likelihood of losing several key players, including Aaron Ramsdale, who continues to be linked with a return to the top flight, Southampton will be aiming to mount a serious challenge at the top end of the table.

Interest is mounting in Ramsdale in particular, with a return to the Premier League looking likely. According to TBR Football, Sunderland have identified Ramsdale as their latest target and are ready to make their move.

The Black Cats are in the hunt for a new number one this season to compete with Anthony Patterson. Sunderland have seen moves for Marcin Bulka and Djorde Petrovic fail already this summer, and Ramsdale could be next on their list.

The report also suggests that the Saints would be looking to recoup the fee they paid last summer for Ramsdale. It would likely cost around £25m to prize Ramsdale away from St Mary’s.

A potential swap incoming?

Sunderland’s interest in Ramsdale is particularly interesting given who is reportedly the Saints’ target to replace him. Several reports have stated that Southampton would be keen on Sunderland’s Patterson.

Patterson has been a very consistent performer in the Championship over the past three years. He would be a great option for Southampton to replace the likely outgoing Ramsdale.

Ramsdale would no doubt cost more than Patterson given the reputation of the England International. However, it could make a deal between the two clubs easier should Sunderland be willing to part ways with Patterson.

Who else could leave?

Southampton are set for a hectic remainder of the transfer window, with widespread speculation surrounding several members of their squad.

Both Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling appear increasingly likely to depart before the window closes. Along with Ramsdale, this would leave significant gaps in the team.

Defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis is also being courted by several clubs across Europe. It could be all change for Southampton between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
