Newcastle United have been linked with a midfield move Atletico Madrid’s Connor Gallagher.
The Sean Longstaff situation at Newcastle United is not a straight-forward one. While the player is a life-long NUFC fan, and given his all for the club, there can come a time in player’s career where they want feel a bit more loved and involved. That’s kind of where Longstaff sits at the moment.
While he is valued by Eddie Howe, he isn’t in his first three picks in midfield. It’s possible to even say he sits sixth - in certain scenarios - in that pecking order, behind Lewis Miley and Joe Willock. And given the player is now 27, arguably in his prime years, you could forgive Longstaff for casting his eye elsewhere, with only a year left on his current Magpies’ deal. Add in the fact he had a ‘completed it’ two years on Tyneside, returning and scoring to the Champions League, then winning a Carabao Cup, it all points towards a potential exit.
NUFC transfers: Leeds eye Longstaff
That uncertainty has opened up the door for Leeds to sniff around. Three rejected bids later - the latest of which was around £12million - they still remain very much at the negotiating table.
It feels likely they will return, but what would that mean for Newcastle. who are already looking for a centre half and a striker to add to the deal for Anthony Elanga, and one in the pipeline for James Trafford?
NUFC transfers: Gallagher to Newcastle
Mundo Deportivo are claiming Newcastle could make a move for former Chelsea and West Brom midfielder Connor Gallagher.
They claim the England international could be a player who Atletico decide to listen to offers for, with a World Cup on the horizon and the player keen for guaranteed football.
They are said to value the player at around £36million.
Gallagher is expected to report back for preseason training on July 21. The team’s final preseason match is scheduled for August 9, fittingly at St James’ Park.
