Newcastle United have been told a £50million bid for Conor Gallagher is set to be accepted by Atletico Madrid this summer.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about the 25-year-old’s potential return to the Premier League from Spain.
Ateltico are not actively looking to sell the England midfielder and feel he still has a “huge” role to play in Diego Simeone’s side, but would be prepared to sell for the right fee.
This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle have set their sights on signing Gallagher to bolster their midfield.
Howe is believed to be a big fan of Gallagher, and is aiming to strengthen his midfield options with the likes of Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley linked with moves away.
Sources say the deal is likely to depend on where the former Chelsea man sees his future and whether he is keen to return to the Premier League.

Newcastle and Tottenham eye Conor Gallagher deal
Newcastle are not the only side interested in Gallagher as Tottenham also hold a long-term interest after failing to sign him from Chelsea last summer.
The midfielder is keen to play regular football next season to secure a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
However, O’Rourke explained that it would be a “surprise” to see him leave Atletico Madrid this summer despite growing interest from Premier League clubs.
“I’d be surprised, in all honesty,” he told Football Insider.
“I’m not surprised that there will be interest in Gallagher from Premier League clubs, because he’s a top player and he shown that for England as well as Chelsea.
“I don’t think he’s actively for sale.
“Atletico Madrid might sell if they get the right offer, that’s what the Spanish media is getting, and they could sell him if the offer is too good to turn down.
“Gallagher was in and out of the team and wasn’t playing in his most preferred position.
“But he still has a huge role to play for Atletico Madrid.
“A lot will depend on where Gallagher sees his future, he has a big year coming up where he’ll want to be playing regularly to break into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
“He joined Atletico for around £40million from Chelsea last year, and it’s going to take a lot more than that to get him away.
“It’ll take around the £50million mark to make Atletico consider selling him.
“I’m not sure Premier League clubs will be willing to go to those levels, but if he is on the market, it doesn’t surprise me that Newcastle are looking at him.”

Eddie Howe tables new James Trafford offer
Alongside their pursuit of Gallagher, Howe is aiming to bring the midfielder’s England international teammate James Trafford to St James’ Park.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 11 July that Newcastle are planning a new offer for Trafford as they remain determined to get the deal over the line.
The latest offer is believed to be valued at £22million up front, with add-ons taking it close to £40million as they look to persuade Burnley to cash in.
This comes after Football Insider revealed that Newcastle may have to overpay for Trafford after Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League.
