Chelsea are set to offload a centre-back this summer with Newcastle United interested.

Newcastle United could follow the £55 million move for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga with another splurge at a Premier League rival, this time Chelsea.

The Magpies are in the market for a centre-back this summer as Eddie Howe prepares for a return to the Champions League next term. That could take the North East outfit to Stamford Bridge with the Blues willing to let Axel Disasi leave the club.

L’Equipe carries reports of Newcastle United interest in the player, who has become somewhat of a forgotten figure at Chelsea. Disasi has been deemed surplus to requirements by Enzo Maresca and spent the back end of last season on loan at Aston Villa.

Newcastle United linked with Chelsea defender

The defender only made 10 appearances for the Villains and didn’t see any minutes in their final four Premier League fixtures. Aston Villa are not set to pursue a permanent move for the player this summer.

L’Equipe named Villarreal as another potential suitor for Disasi, who has had a €30 million - or £25 million - price tag placed on his head by Chelsea. talkSPORT claimed that Villarreal were yet to finalise a formal offer to send to Chelsea.

Disasi was the subject of a bid from Tottenham Hotspur in January when the north London club were in desperate need of defensive reinforcements due to injury issues. The player is not part of the Chelsea squad involved at the Club World Cup. Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, and Mamadou Sarr were chosen as the centre-backs.

Axel Disasi praised by Jamie Carragher

Disasi arrived at Stamford Bridge from Monaco for £38.5 million in 2023 and has made 61 appearances for Chelsea. He has Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

After a huge performance against Manchester City last year, Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Disasi. He said: "I can't remember a better defensive performance this season from a central defender. You're coming away to Manchester City and playing against the best striker in the world. He was brilliant, man of the match, definitely the best player on the pitch.

"That was the type of performance you'd see from defenders 15 or 20 years ago, it was a throwback with backs against the wall and throwing himself against everything. Talking about Chelsea, that was a John Terry type performance and I can't give any more praise than that."
