£273m in 10 years - Man United's 'lost' transfer fees are a glaring issue for Ineos to solve

Manchester United have been historically poor at selling players in transfer windows and nothing has changed this summer.

There are just 35 days to go until Manchester United kick off their 2025/26 Premier League campaign against Arsenal, and Ineos are still yet to sell any players this summer.

Ruben Amorim outlined five unwanted players that he wanted sold, with all of them told not to return to pre-season training last week.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are all up for sale, and the resulting funds were then there to be reinvested into the squad.

But a lack of transfer activity has caused United’s entire window to grind to a halt, and once again, the club will be forced to lower their asking price and sell for cheap.

Man United should be selling players for much more

Already this window, United fans have watched former players Anthony Elanga and Alvaro Fernandez sold for huge fees.

Elanga was sold to Nottingham Forest for £15m but re-sold to Newcastle United this summer for £55m. Likewise, Fernandez was sold for just £5m and has now made a huge £43m move to Real Madrid.

A study from The Athletic has found that United have actually lost out on £273m in the past decade from players who have been re-sold for much more than what the Red Devils collected.

United were second only to Manchester City, but have made considerably less from Pep Guardiola’s side from player sales in that same time period.

It suggests United are not getting full value from their player sales, and that is something Ineos need to get control over sooner rather than later.

Ineos face difficult stick-or-twist transfer situation

The numbers are clear – United are poor sellers and have often been forced to sell players for less than their value simply to get them off the books at Old Trafford.

Ineos are at risk of having to do the exact same thing this summer, with clubs so far unwilling to meet the asking prices of players such as Rashford, Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.

For example, United want £40m for Rashford, a very realistic price for a Premier League star. But Barcelona prefer a loan deal, and now Ineos are at risk of missing out.

The situation Ineos now face is whether to cut their asking prices to force through sales and therefore quickly reinvest in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Or, to stay stubborn in the market and keep to their asking prices, even if it means sales don’t go through until the final stages of the window.
