Report: One of Wolves' highest earning players could now follow Doyle to Birmingham, he's open…

There has been an exodus at Wolves over the last few weeks, and seemingly more players could leave Molineux.

Wolves set about offloading players almost immediately, with Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United, Rayan Ait-Nouri going to Manchester City, and Pablo Sarabia and Craig Dawson leaving at the end of their contracts.

Nelson Semedo is a free agent right now and is not expected to sign a new deal.

We have also had a couple of loan exits, with Nasser Djiga going to Rangers and Tommy Doyle sealing a move to Birmingham City.

And there has now been a suggestion that another player on the books at Wolves could actually follow Doyle to St Andrew’s.

Hwang Hee-chan could join Birmingham after tough season for Wolves

Hwang Hee-chan had a very forgettable 2024/25 season.

The South Korea international often lacked impact for Wanderers, and still couldn’t find his mojo when Vitor Pereira came in.

It was a real shame, because Hwang had been one of Wolves’ best players in 2023/24 – and during that season, he signed a new contract at Molineux which saw him become one of Wolves’ highest earners.

But now, he could be on the move.

According to veteran South Korean journalist Han June, writing in Football Asian, Hwang is now an ambitious target for Birmingham City.

The Championship side are expected to pursue one of two South Korean internationals, with Jeonbuk Hyundai winger Song Min-kyu being the other.

Of the two, Hwang is the preferred option due to ‘his top-level experience and physical attributes suited to English football’.

Hwang is apparently open to the move, according to another well-connected South Korean journalist Joel Kim, who wrote on X: “I’ve personally been sitting on this for a while now. Past few weeks through multiple ITKs on both the #BCFC and #WWFC sides, I’ve heard rumblings that Birmingham have pursued Hwang for a loan-buy deal.

“Wolves want a straight transfer. I understand Hwang is keen on joining Blues, especially due to the reasons I’ve mentioned in my thread, which was inspired by these reports.”

Hwang to Birmingham would be surprising

These are some bold claims, and it will be fascinating to see if Birmingham do actually push for Wolves’ #11.

There is definitely a possibility for Hwang to leave this summer, given the struggles he had in 2024/25, the length of time he’s already been at Wolves and the fact he’s turning 30 next January.

And certainly, if Wolves sign Jhon Arias that could increase Hwang’s exit prospects.

But few will have seen links to Birmingham coming, given they have just got back into the Championship from League One.

But clearly, they are looking to make a big go of it next season, and their recent loan signing of Doyle was definitely a statement.

Goals – 24

Assists – 8

Backed by wealthy American owners, Birmingham could well throw a decent offer Wolves’ way for Hwang.

Wolves, of course, knocked back a £21 million bid from Marseille for Hwang last summer, and may be hoping for similar offers this time around, although that feels unlikely.

But given Hwang’s status as a big earner at Wolves, it might be a tricky deal for them to do. Unless they got him on loan and split the wage payments with Wolves.
