There was not a dry eye in sight during a performance of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' prior to kick-off.
During the performance, Preston captain Ben Whiteman placed a wreath in front of the travelling Liverpool supporters.
His act was met with a round of applause from the away end before a minute's silence was also observed before the action got underway.
With Jota's chant ringing around the away end, Conor Bradley opened the scoring shortly after the half hour mark.

Slot went on to make a number of changes at half-time, with Nunez amongst those introduced.
The forward needed just eight minutes to get on the scoresheet, though, as he capitalised on a defensive error by Preston.
After latching onto the ball in the opposition half, Nunez rounded goalkeeper Daniel Iversen to slot the ball into the back of the net.
He immediately paid tribute to Jota by recreating his trademark celebration before pointing to the sky.
Nunez dropped to the floor and sat cross-legged whilst pretending to use a video game controller with his hands.
Jota had been an avid gamer when not playing, most notably on EA Sports' 'FIFA' series of video games.

A number of players have replicated his celebration after scoring since the Portuguese's passing.
His former Wolves team-mate Raul Jimenez did the same following a goal for Mexico at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Nunez's touching tribute comes after Liverpool announced they had retired Jota's shirt number.
The number 20 will be recognised as Jota's at all levels of the club, it was confirmed last week.
Jota scored a total of 65 goals and provided 26 assists in 182 appearances for Liverpool.
During five years at Anfield, the forward also won four major trophies including last season's Premier League title.

More tributes continued during the second half, with a banner displaying the Portuguese carried along the front of the away end.
Cody Gakpo, meanwhile, once again performed Jota's arm-snapping goal celebration after adding a third for the visitors.
His strike followed a consolation effort from Preston's Liam Lindsay with seven minutes remaining.
However, Gakpo was on hand to restore his side's two-goal cushion just five minutes later.
A flowing team move was finished off as the Dutch forward stroked the ball home after a dummy from Nunez.
The goal prompted another rousing rendition of Liverpool's Jota chant from those in the Bill Shankly Kop.
Those chants continued up until the referee's final whistle confirmed the Reds as 3-1 victors.
Following full-time, the Liverpool players and staff were serenaded by the 6,000 fans who had made the journey to Deepdale.
The group included those who had not been part of the matchday squad, including captain Virgil van Dijk.
Several members of the squad could be seen joining in with their chanting of Jota's song as they applauded the fans in unison.
