Lillard, a nine-time All-Star and seven-time All-NBA selection, has been a free agent since the Milwaukee Bucks waived and stretched him to clear cap space for Myles Turner.
While he plans to do most of his rehab on the West Coast, having a teammate like Tatum, who is also recovering, could provide valuable mental and emotional support.
Tatum had a strong 2024–25 season, averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game while shooting 45.2% from the field and 34.3% from three.

Lillard, before his injury, averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists, making him a perfect fit for the Celtics’ lineup once healthy.
Meanwhile, the Celtics have been active this offseason, addressing their roster and financial challenges. They traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to manage their cap space, but gained some hope by acquiring Anfernee Simons in the Holiday trade.
However, the team has also faced setbacks with the departure of Luke Kornet and the likely departure of Al Horford in free agency.
