Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, confirmed Viktor Gyokeres faces disciplinary action after failing to report for pre-season training on Saturday, July 12, risking fines and an apology to his teammates.

Viktor Gyokeres, believing Sporting reneged on a €70 million (£60m) transfer agreement, has taken a firm stance, reportedly stating he will not play for the club again.

Arsenal’s latest offer of €65m plus €15m in add-ons was rejected, with Sporting holding firm for a €70m guaranteed fee. Despite the impasse, sources indicate both clubs are close to a compromise, with Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta actively engaged in Lisbon.

The Gunners’ determination to sign Viktor Gyokeres stems from Mikel Arteta’s priority to bolster the attack after finishing second in the 2024/25 Premier League, 10 points behind Liverpool. Gyokeres’ explosive style, physicality, and goal-scoring prowess make him the ideal fit, having outperformed alternatives like RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. His 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting underline his elite finishing.

While tensions persist, Arsenal remain optimistic, buoyed by Gyokeres’ clear desire to join. Posts on X reflect growing excitement among fans, with @AFC__Xtra citing Fabrizio Romano’s claim that the deal is “absolutely on.” As Arsenal prepare for their pre-season tour, securing Gyokeres could be a statement signing to challenge for the title.
