The Boston Red Sox are suddenly extremely thin behind the dish.
Blake Sabol, who appeared in just eight games this season for Boston before being outrighted off the active roster and stuck in Triple-A Worcester, was shipped off to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations on Saturday.
“Who cares?”
I can hear you through your phone/tablet/laptop speakers, but the fact of the matter is you shouldn’t brush this aside as some random minor league trade. Boston willingly just gave away its only depth at an extremely volatile position, and it probably wasn’t just for some extra cash.
Could another move be coming?

The Red Sox are certainly pleased with what they’ve gotten from rookie Carlos Narváez, but let’s not forget that he’s entering uncharted waters in terms of overall workload this season, so it probably wouldn’t be smart to keep trotting him out there five times a week. Connor Wong, his backup, has been one of the worst catchers in baseball this season, so is that the guy you wan’t giving the starter a reprieve?
I would probably look elsewhere…
Seby Zavala, who has an opt out on August 22, and Enderso Lira, who has spent much of the year on the development list, are the only two options left in Worcester, so the organization almost certainly will make a move to add some more depth.
Wong could be optioned down, should the club choose to add another major league option.

Boston also could find one of those depth players in a pinch, should an injury occur. It’s never smart business to wait for a need to arrive before addressing it, though, so keep your eyes peeled for a potential addition to be made at some point following the break.
