But inside Cox Pavilion — the smaller of the two arenas on the campus of UNLV — the Cavs continued Summer League play with their first victory of the July tournament. Cleveland topped the Milwaukee Bucks, 93-83. It is now 1-1 and will have at least two games remaining. Shades of Thursday afternoon in their Summer League opener, the Cavs built a big lead, going up by a game-high 19 toward the end of the third quarter on a Nae’Qwan Tomlin 3-pointer that forced a Milwaukee timeout and delighted the star-studded courtside row featuring Donovan Mitchell, All-NBA teammate Evan Mobley and sharpshooter Sam Merrill. This time, the Cavs didn’t blow the lead.Tomlin, the two-way forward who appeared in five NBA games last season, continued his strong play and made clutch plays throughout the fourth quarter. He recorded a double-double, tallying 22 points and 13 rebounds in 28 minutes. Through the first two games, Tomlin has reaffirmed why the organization made a two-year commitment to his development this past March. “For summer, he is kind of like our Evan,” said Summer League coach Omar Cook, referencing the All-Star Mobley. “Trying to put the ball in his hands, rebound and push the ball and initiate offense. He is doing stuff that is going to help him once the NBA season starts. For Summer League, it’s about our best players being at their best but also playing a role. Him being a point-forward will help. He’s been great.”Jaylon Tyson, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, was forced into the primary ballhandler role for the second straight game in the absence of third-year point guard Craig Porter Jr. With Porter sidelined because of hamstring soreness, Tyson initiated the offense effectively enough — despite six turnovers. Tyson had 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists.Rookie Tyrese Proctor delivered his best performance in Vegas, including an off-the-dribble step-back 3-pointer that had Mitchell mimicking the move from his seat. Tristan Enaruna, the Cleveland State product using this stage as an NBA tryout, had 13 points off the bench — and one thunderous highlight-reel poster dunk. “He has NBA size, can play 2-4, can shoot the ball and can guard,” Cook said of Enaruna. “He is playing the right way. He is not trying to force it. He is not trying to do too much. He’s a team player. He is doing everything I’m asking him to do. Been a pleasure to coach. He can be an NBA player.”Milwaukee made a few second-half surges. It cut the Cleveland advantage to seven with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. But Tomlin hit a triple against the Milwaukee zone to push the lead back to double digits. On the ensuing possession, following a Milwaukee make, Tomlin had a timely put-back — enough breathing room to secure the victory.
