Hornets to hold training camp at The Citadel, face NBA champs Thunder at Coliseum

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The NBA is coming back to the Lowcountry this fall.

The Charlotte Hornets will be holding part of their preseason camp at McAlister Fieldhouse at The Citadel the school confirmed. It will be the 4th straight year an NBA team will spend part of the preseason at the school.

The Hornets will also open their preseason schedule at the North Charleston Coliseum taking on the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder led by league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on October 5th. The Thunder confirmed the game is coming to the Lowcountry on Friday.

The New York Knicks have spent the last 2 seasons having their training camp at The Citadel led by Jalen Brunson. In 2022, former MVP Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers spent training camp in Charleston.

The exhibition game at the Coliseum will be the first for the NBA since 2012 when the Charlotte Bobcats hosted the New Orleans Hornets. That game was headlined by the top overall draft pick Anthony Davis leading the Hornets against Charlotte.

Before that, LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal played in the Lowcountry in 2009 leading the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Bobcats.
