David Ornstein: Arsenal now also reach agreement to sign 'exceptional' star

Arsenal have now reached an agreement to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the Gunners paying a total fee of around €73.5m, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

It's been a lengthy transfer saga between Arsenal and Gyokeres as Mikel Arteta's side searches for their new centre-forward. No Arsenal player reached double figures for goals in the Premier League during the 2024/2025 campaign, and it was obvious that a new striker was needed if they wanted to gain ground on title-winners Liverpool.

Arsenal focused on other positions in the opening few weeks of the transfer window. Kepa Arrizabalaga was the first to arrive through the door from Chelsea, before midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard were confirmed as new additions shortly after. Attention has now turned to the final third, with Arsenal splashing the cash in the summer transfer window.

According to The Athletic's Ornstein, Arsenal are now in the process of completing a deal to sign Gyokeres after taking the final steps in negotiations with the Portuguese club. A deal is now in place, for a fee of £64m, with Gyokeres' agent waiving his fee in order to get a move over the line.

Gyokeres, described as 'exceptional' by Sporting coach Rui Borges, appeared to be desperate to make the move to the Emirates Stadium, refusing to turn up to pre-season training last week. The Swedish striker has now got what he wanted with a deal in principle reached.

It was turning into a messy situation in recent weeks, with Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas insisting that Gyokeres will be fined after he refused to turn up to training. Varandas confirmed he was very comfortable with keeping Gyokeres at the club if nobody met his value, but Arsenal have now taken the deal to the next level.
