Amber shines for Belgium

In a thrilling Group B clash at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, Belgium pulled off a dramatic 2–1 win over Portugal in Sion, Switzerland.

And while it was Janice Cayman’s last-gasp strike that officially sealed the win, it was West Ham United Women’s centre-back Amber Tysiak who stole the spotlight throughout the match with a commanding display in both boxes.

Deep into injury time Tysiak bundled the ball into the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble, sending the Belgian bench into celebration. But the joy was short-lived—the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Remarkably, this was her second disallowed goal in added-on time, with another effort earlier having also been chalked off for the same reason. Despite the frustration, her attacking presence from centre-back was a huge asset for Belgium in the dying moments.

Throughout the match, Tysiak anchored the Belgian defence with maturity and strength. As Portugal pushed forward late in the second half, she remained composed, showing intelligent positioning and strong leadership to keep the backline steady.

Her reading of the game and ability to snuff out danger was instrumental in preventing Portugal from taking control after their equaliser in the 87th minute.

While much of her reputation is built on her defensive reliability, Tysiak showcased just how valuable she can be in attack during set pieces and chaotic phases of play. Her instinct to be in the right place at the right time nearly resulted in a match-winning moment—twice.

Even though neither goal stood, her role in creating those chances underlined her versatility and big-game mentality.

Since joining West Ham United Women in January 2023, Tysiak has developed into a consistent performer in the Women’s Super League. Her showing at the Euros, despite Belgium’s group stage exit, highlighted her individual growth and importance to both club and country.

Already capped regularly by Belgium since 2021, she continues to be one of the national team’s most trusted defenders.

For Tysiak, this match may not have ended with her name on the scoresheet, but it was a showcase of heart, skill, and determination. As Belgium bowed out of the tournament, she left the pitch having proven herself as one of their standout performers—nearly the hero, and certainly a key figure in a night of high drama.
