Daggers for Andy

Andy Carroll has completed a shock move to sixth tier Dagenham & Redbridge.

The former England international, who spent six seasons on West Ham United's books as well as having represented Newcastle United and Liverpool has signed a three-year contract with the National League South.

Now 36, Carroll returns to the south east of England having spent the last two seasons in the lower reaches of the French league system, having played for Ameins for a year and then Bordeaux last season, who were relegated to the French fourth division due to financial irregularities.

A huge coup for the Essex side, Carroll has also been confirmed as a minority shareholders of the Daggers, who spent nine years in the English professional leagues - including one season in League One (third tier) - before being relegated to non-league once more in 2016.

"It doesn't matter the level, or anything, as long as I get on the pitch and play football," Carroll said, upon confirming the news of his return to the UK. "That's all that matters."

Carroll's arrival was confirmed just 24 hours after the club was acquired by a Qatari consortium, who have installed fellow former Hammer Anwar Uddin MBE as a non-executive director.

"I consider it an absolute privilege to return to the club after such a memorable spell as a player," said the ex-defender. "I’m genuinely excited to reconnect with the fans and everyone associated with Dagenham & Redbridge, and to play a part in helping the club move firmly in the right direction."
