Former NFL scout scorches Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers: ‘A huge ego’

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff has a lot of thoughts about Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers after watching his documentary ‘Enigma.’

Middlekauff came away from it believing that Rodgers is a lost soul with not many people to lean on in his life, which is why he has a ‘huge ego.'

“Just feels like he’s kind of a lost soul with no family to lean on,” Middlekauff said on 3&Out. “And I do think as you age, as you get older, especially if you have the amount of disposable income, which you have in Aaron Rodgers’ situation, they have nothing to lean on. And you’re just watching Aaron Rodgers, you’re like, ‘This guy feels kind of like a lost soul.’ A huge ego who’s just a lost soul.”

The documentary follows Rodgers on his offseason treks, and Middlekauff says the entire thing was a ‘bizarre experience’ that highlighted Rodgers ‘trauma’ and lack of ability to compartmentalize what happened to him.

“There is a chip on Aaron Rodgers’ shoulder. Still be harboring this energy towards his childhood. You kind of feel it… He’s this troubled soul who really likes himself some Aaron Rodgers," Middlekauff said. “My takeaway watching this was like I just have a hard time seeing Tom [Brady] or Peyton [Manning] kind of act like this. And a huge element of it is, you know, part of this was shot, it’s, he’s single, no family, no kids, obviously doesn’t talk to his family.”

As for Rodgers’ fit with the Steelers and his personality, he seems to be enjoying that and cited Tomlin as a critical reason he wanted to play for the Steelers.

“I think there were conversations with other organizations for sure, but again, the rapport that fell in between me and Mike made it to where, as I was going through my personal stuff, there wasn’t any other option for me. It was here, or not play,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers had 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions in 2024. He went just 5-12 in his starts with the Jets, and even after they acquired Davante Adams, they went just 3-8. It was a tough season for Rodgers, who also had multiple leg injuries.
