Major Setback for United as Andre Onana Suffers Injury
Manchester United have been dealt an early pre-season blow. Goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to miss the club’s US tour due to a hamstring injury.
The keeper picked up the injury during his first week back at training. He could be out for up to eight weeks. That rules him out of the summer friendlies. But, it also places his availability for the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17 in serious doubt.
For head coach Ruben Amorim, the timing couldn’t be worse. The pre-season seen as crucial to prepare the squad. Without his first-choice keeper, Amorim may have to reassess his plans. He may have to give game time to backup keepers or seek cover in the transfer market.
Onana’s Absence Opens Door for Transfer Moves
Onana’s injury adds fuel to the fire around his uncertain future at Old Trafford. After a rocky debut season filled with costly mistakes, the keeper’s role has been under constant scrutiny.
Reports suggest Utd might be open to letting him go for around £30m. That is far less than the £47m they paid Inter Milan for him. However, selling an injured player is far from straightforward. While United have been linked with **Aston Villa**’s Emiliano Martinez. But, talks are reportedly stalled due to a gap in valuation.
Botafogo’s John and Antwerp’s Senne Lammens are also being monitored as low-cost options. Man Utd are working on a tight budget this summer. So, Amorim could opt for a backup option instead of a marquee signing.
Missing Onana during pre-season also disrupts plans to solidify the backline ahead of the new campaign. They will be playing against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the US as well.
