Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has worked closely with new tight end Jonnu Smith long enough to understand his strengths and weaknesses.
The Smiths were together in both Tennessee and Atlanta, where Arthur was the primary playcaller while Jonnu served as one of the lead tight ends in the offense. In Pittsburgh, they should have another act to play on stage.
ESPN’s Brooke Pryor talked about the role that Jonnu will play in Arthur’s offense, which will be a receiver Swiss Army Knife that can move around the formation, creating mismatches.
“I think that Arthur Smith is in heaven right now,” Pryor said on 93.7 the Fan. “This is an Arthur Smith move. I think that [Jonnu] is going to be a Swiss Army knife type of weapon. I don’t want to necessarily say tight end [number] three behind Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington because he is being paid to be more than a tight end. But I think he could do a little bit of everything in some ways.”
Jonnu, who received a new one-year, $12 million contract from the Steelers after the trade from the Miami Dolphins, is coming off a career-best season. He set career-highs last year with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in the Dolphins offense. All of those marks were franchise records.
During his years with Arthur, Jonnu Smith progressively became a more prominent part of the offense, putting up consecutive 400-yard seasons with Arthur Smith as the offensive coordinator.
