NFL writer proves to be Jalen Hurts' harshest critic yet with latest QB rankings

It wouldn't be a typical day during the offseason if Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts weren't facing some criticism or overlooked as an elite quarterback.

FanSided's NFL Spin Zone writer, Lou Scataglia, shared his power rankings of the starting quarterbacks in the league. Hurts might have been hit with his lowest ranking of the offseason as he placed at 16.

"Here I am again being lower on Jalen Hurts than most, but I don't see how some have him near the top-5. What appears to be happening is people are taking the massive success of the Philadelphia Eagles and using that to bump Hurts up, but when you really look at it deeper, Hurts is an average QB just along for the ride.

For years now, the Eagles have had a top-tier OL, wide receiver room, running game, and defense. Despite the loaded talent on both sides of the ball, Hurts has never thrown for 4,000 yards or 25 touchdown passes in a single season. He also does take a lot of sacks and is not one to always play on time.

Jalen Hurts just isn't a legitimate drop-back quarterback in the NFL and has never been a high-volume passer, but that's kind of the first responsibility of a QB in this league, right? Hurts is average and is 16th in our QB rankings for 2025."

Is Hurts an average quarterback, or is he better than that?

Every Eagles fan is most likely screaming at the screen, saying that he isn't an average quarterback. The stats would tell some different stories.

Let's address the obvious: there is an acknowledgement that in 2024, Hurts threw for under 3,000 yards in the regular season, attempted 361 passes, and threw just 18 touchdowns. Those are low, but there are other indications of how great his Super Bowl season was.

Statistical Category Numbers NFL Ranking

Completion Percentage 68.7 8th (at least 360 pass attempts)

Average Yards Per Completion 8.0 4th (at least 360 pass attempts)

Interceptions 5 3rd (at least 360 pass attempts)

QBR 65.6 10th (at least 360 pass attempts)

QB Rating 103.7 5th (at least 360 pass attempts)

Are these considered the sexy stats that would typically get a quarterback in the Pro Bowl? No, but these are efficiency stats that show Hurts was smart with the football and made good decisions.

That doesn't include the 630 yards and 14 touchdowns he had on the ground during the regular season. His effectiveness on short yards with the Tush Push made it a staple in their offense that not many NFL teams have been able to stop or execute themselves.

What about his postseason performance? 726 passing yards, five touchdowns, one interception, a passer rating of 108.6, and a completion percentage of 71.4. He rushed for another 194 yards and five touchdowns to win the Super Bowl and was named Super Bowl MVP.

Everyone keeps harping on the fact that the Eagles are a running team and Saquon Barkley carried them to the Super Bowl. Barkley did all the same things with the New York Giants. Why weren't they better?
