In a dramatic Group A encounter at the Women’s Euro 2025, Finland - featuring two Hammers - played out a 1–1 draw with tournament hosts Switzerland in Geneva.

The result saw Switzerland advance to the quarter-finals while Finland suffered heartbreak, conceding a last minute goal which sent them crashing out of the tournament.

Finland looked set to take all three points after a composed penalty from Natalia Kuikka opened the scoring in the 79th minute. The spot kick was awarded after Emma Koivisto was fouled in the box.

However the drama didn’t end there as Swiss substitute Riola Xhemaili struck deep into stoppage time, firing home a loose ball in the 92nd minute to earn Switzerland a last-gasp equaliser which sent the home crowd into wild celebrations, as it secured their spot in the quarter finals.

Finland's West Ham duo — midfielder Oona Siren and centre-back Eva Nyström - played key roles for their nation. Siren started the match and brought calm and structure to Finland’s midfield.

Her passing was tidy and intelligent, helping to maintain possession and control the tempo. She frequently offered herself as a passing option, showing composure and vision in tight spaces, especially during Finland’s strong spells of control in the first half.

In defence, Eva Nyström delivered a commanding performance at centre-back. She dealt well with Switzerland’s attacking threats, clearing danger on multiple occasions and maintaining solid positioning throughout.

In the first half, she nearly contributed at the other end of the pitch as well, with a deflected shot that required a save from Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng. Her leadership in the back line was vital as Finland attempted to hold on to their narrow lead late in the game.

Despite the disappointment of conceding so late and tumbling out of the tournament, both Sirén and Nyström impressed with their individual performances. Their maturity, discipline, and tactical awareness were evident, and their efforts stood out in what was ultimately a cruel exit for Finland.

So close: the Fins edged out on goal difference

For West Ham, both players return to east London having gained further valuable international experience while demonstrating their quality on one of the biggest stages in women’s football. You may view highlights from the game below.
