Calm Camila leads the way

Camila Sáez's Chile claimed a confident 3–0 victory over Peru in their opening Copa America Femenina 2025 group stage match, putting on a dominant display to secure all three points.

While Peru held their own early on, Chile’s superior organisation and attacking edge eventually proved too much. Goals from Pamela Cabezas, Sonya Keefe, and Mary Valencia sealed the win, keeping Chile in strong contention for the knockout rounds.

At the heart of Chile’s success was Camila Sáez, the experienced Hammers centre-half. Starting and completing the full 90 minutes, Sáez delivered a composed and commanding performance in defence.

Her positioning was excellent throughout, cutting out several of Peru’s limited attacking attempts - while her calm presence and leadership helped maintain structure at the back and ensured that Chile rarely looked troubled.

Sáez's aerial strength and physicality were key factors in Chile’s ability to keep a clean sheet. She was especially dominant when Peru attempted to play long or deliver crosses into the box, winning duels and organising the defensive line effectively.

Her distribution from the back also played a role in helping Chile transition into attack, allowing the team to build calmly from deep rather than forcing rushed clearances.

In the first half, Peru showed plenty of resilience and organisation, but Sáez ensured that any moments of threat were quickly dealt with. As Chile took control after the break and began to create chances and score, her focus never wavered. Even with a growing lead, she kept the defensive line disciplined, shutting down any hope of a Peruvian response.

With over 100 caps already for Chile, Sáez remains one of the team’s most reliable figures. Her role in securing this clean sheet will be vital as Chile continue their pursuit of continental glory in the tournament. You may view all the goals and best moments from Chile's win below.
