Douglas Luiz: Latest from Italy on potential transfer to West Ham – Explanation of situation

Douglas Luiz signed for Juventus last summer in a deal which came at the same time as Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior going the other way to Aston Villa. The player is now for sale, with West Ham linked strongly in recent days.

Luiz had performed superbly in the Premier League for Unai Emery’s side and whilst there was excitement in Turin about the midfielder’s arrival, there was also concern about the structure of the transfer. It’s not so long ago that Juventus faced serious sanctions over their Plusvalenza scandal, which saw them conducting transfers involving multiple players and exaggerating the values to help their accounts.

When the Brazilian failed to get off to a good start in Italy, the media vultures, and fans alike, began to circle and from then on it seemed like he was on a slippery slope which would result in an exit.

January came and went and despite lots of rumours, Luiz stayed in Turin. Now it’s thought an exit is likelier than a stay.

It’s probably no exaggeration to say half the Premier League has been linked. West Ham are thought to have entered the picture strongly in recent days, and Monday’s edition of [Corriere dello Sport](http://corrieredellosport.it) reports the Hammers have shown interest and there’s ‘several intermediaries’ working on a return to the Premier League.

That’s probably why there’s been so many transfer claims involving so many clubs, with multiple intermediaries trying to win the commission on a deal.

Monday’s edition of [Tuttosport](http://tuttosport.com), a sport newspaper based in Turin, reports West Ham have offered a €10m loan with a €30m option. That option would become compulsory under certain conditions, which aren’t outlined.

Juventus aren’t yet convinced but that could change depending on what else arrives in terms of offers.

On their books, Juve put around €50m down as the purchase price for Douglas Luiz and to avoid an accounting loss they’d need to receive around €40m this summer. West Ham’s deal provides the chance of kicking the can down the road by a further year but still getting that amount.

If that buying option was guaranteed there’s a likelihood Juventus would accept.
