Chelsea to get unique honour for next four years after winning Club World Cup

Chelsea's shirt will boast a special champions badge until 2029 following their Club World Cup victory.

The Blues were crowned world champions as they produced an outstanding display to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, banking a staggering £84million prize in the process.

Two carbon copy goals from Cole Palmer and a cool Joao Pedro chip on the stroke of half-time put the west Londoners in a perfect position against the Champions League holders.

Enzo Maresca's side saw out the win with a resolute defensive display in the second-half, as the day ended on a sour note when a brawl broke out, with PSG boss Luis Enrique and Pedro clashing.

Despite this, Chelsea were soon able to celebrating becoming the inaugural winners of the revamped Club World Cup.

US President Donald Trump was on hand to present the trophy to their players, and was even present in the middle of the lift as he awkwardly hung around on the platform where the presentation happened.

And while victory earned the Blues a new piece of silverware and world champions status, their rewards don't end there.

To mark the achievement, they will also wear an exclusive world champions badge on their shirts for the foreseeable future.

For the next four years, Chelsea's strips will boast a new-look crest that recognises them as winners of the first-ever 32-team continental competition.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino revealed the design of the build-up to the final, which depicts the Club World Cup logo, and comes in two colourways - gold on white and white on gold.

But what Blues fans will be most pleased about is the words 'World Champions', which are on full display over the top of the badge.

Clubs were previously given permission to wear this addition to their jersey for 12 months, reflecting the annual staging of the event.

But the switch to a new format has seen a rule change, with Chelsea now the tournament's reigning champions until the next edition in 2029.

This is likely to rub salt in the wounds of several of their Premier League rivals, not least Manchester City, who missed out on the honour with their shock competition exit against Al Hilal.

Since winning the old version of the Club World Cup in 2023, the Citizens have boasted a gold plate on their sky blue strip after the FIFA Intercontinental Cup took the event's place in 2024.

But with City failing to retain their world champion status, they will now have to watch another English side don the prestigious badge for an even longer period.

And while City may not be best pleased by this, arguably no team will feel more aggrieved than Liverpool.

That is because the Reds barely got to wear the commemorative badge when they were crowned Club World Cup Champions in 2019.

Jurgen Klopp's side followed up their Champions League triumph the previous season with victory over Brazilian outfit Flamengo in the intercontinental tournament seven months later.

And while City wore the golden patch with immediate effect after their win, Liverpool could not say the same.

In fact, they only displayed the crest on their shirts on a handful of occasions due to a rule on kits in England.

At the time, the Premier League rules stated that kit changes - including new badges being added to existing shirts - could not be made during the campaign.

Liverpool were free to wear the gold badge during their Champions League campaign, but these rules meant they were permitted to display the world champion logo for just one domestic game.

This later changed, as Chelsea were allowed to wear the badge when they won the competition in 2021, with the Reds' fury being compounded two years later when City then did the same.

And all English fans will now have to get used to seeing the badge on full display on Chelsea's jersey for years to come.
