Having hung up his boots in 2019, Fletcher returned initially as head coach of the under-16s before he became technical director in 2021. Jason Wilcox replaced him in the role last year and Fletcher has since been coach under Erik ten Hag and a link between the first team squad and academy.
“I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players," Fletcher said.
"I’m looking forward to working with such a talented age-group; supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.”
Fletcher had the chance to stay on Ruben Amorim's first-team staff but chose the opportunity to begin his journey as a head coach of the younger age group.
He did not previously desire the role as twin sons Tyler and Jack were in the age groups. The duo have now progressed, with 80-cap international Fletcher slotting into the role.
