Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 7/14: Sherlock Goodell to the Rescue

OBR Newswire Bloviation Header

Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!

It's going to be a busy day for your friendly neighborhood webdork as the OBR team starts preparing for the start of Training Camp season in earnest. Lots of projects are underway, and there's a lot to do in the next week and a half until the media is allowed in to Training Camp on Wednesday, 7/23.

New features, both free and VIP, are being prepared, and I'll be spending the next two weeks herding cats to make them happen.

While we scramble, the Cleveland Browns and the NFL are busy saying nothing relevant to the ongoing situation with Quinshon Judkins in Broward County, Florida. As usual, there's heavy coverage both from the OBR and other, somewhat less snarky sites such as Cleveland.com, the Chronicle-Telegram, CBS News, Pro Football Talk, and NFL Trade Rumors.

The judge found probable cause yesterday, stipulated a $2,500 bond (which Judkins paid), and ordered him to avoid contacting the alleged victim and not to access firearms.

The case sounds a little odd in that the alleged victim waited five days to report the battery to police. The alleged incident occurred on July 7 but wasn't reported until July 12. But none of us were there or know what happened, so please avoid social media where people will take this fact and extrapolate all sorts of imagined scenarios.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot takes a crack at speculating about what the ramifications could be for Judkins and the Browns, offering that a "six-game suspension without pay is the standard", but that the standard could be modified based on the details of the case. The NFL will do its investigation, quietly and generally slowly, while Browns fans once again await Roger Goodell's verdict.

If that indeed comes to pass, the Browns will need to rely on Dylan Sampson and Jerome Ford to carry the load, and fantasy football players will be picking Sampson a lot earlier than expected a week ago. If so, the worst-case scenario is a borderline lost season for Judkins, who will be asked to adjust to the speed of the NFL in the middle of a season. The Browns' intended return to Stefanski's desired scheme is already taking a hit.

Great. Just great.

Elsewhere, we have a handful of stories preparing us for Training Camp:

Feel free to ponder those while I pound more coffee and get this place ready for the craziness of Camp and the football season, even if enthusiasm has decreased a little in the last 72 hours.
