Arsenal are hopeful they can agree a new deal in principle with Ethan Nwaneri this week, having reportedly made progress over the weekend.

Sami Mokbel reported for the BBC on Sunday that Arsenal were set to make a formal offer of a new contract to Ethan Nwaneri, with extension talks set to accelerate amid a will from all parties to reach an agreement.

Mokbel added that the offer will either be a five-year deal or a four-year deal with the option to extend by a further year.

Though there hasn’t been a definitive breakthrough yet, there’s growing hope a deal can be reached with negotiations advanced.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Sunday night that Arsenal are planning to get a new deal done for Nwaneri within days, and the same journalist then added on Monday morning that a deal can be sealed in principle this week.

Romano reports that Arsenal believe significant progress was made over the weekend, and all the indications are positive at this stage.

Again, there’s no suggestion of a done deal or definitive agreement yet, but the club are evidently optimistic things are moving in that direction.

Nwaneri had drawn interest from Chelsea and some German clubs, hoping to capitalise on the fact he only has a year left on his current deal.

Arsenal’s contract negotiations have perhaps also gone a little slower than hoped due to the player’s participation in the u21 European Championships with England. But he’s now free from his international commitments and able to rejoin talks.

Thankfully, it looks like the 18-year-old is ready to turn down the interest from elsewhere to extend his stay in north London.
