Return of the red? Buffalo Bills reportedly unveiling alternate helmet in near future

Everyone loves nostalgia, and the Buffalo Bills could be tapping into sentimental affection for the past in their final season at Highmark Stadium.

A report from Buffalo Rumblings earlier this week stated that the team would be unveiling an alternate helmet later this month. The site added that the helmet is expected to be different from the Nike-sponsored Rivalries Series uniforms that will be revealed later this summer.

Multiple teams have unveiled new helmets in the past few seasons, with the New Orleans Saints being the latest team to announce their alternates.

While the Bills are reportedly unveiling an alternate helmet in the next few weeks, Zach Cohen of Fanduel reported that it would not be a new alternate.

"Here’s what I know for a fact: the Bills did not file for a ‘new’ alternate helmet this offseason,“ Cohen wrote. ”So, like I’ve said all year, a team could sneak in & unveil an EXACT copy of a former uniform/helmet.”

If the Bills were to unveil an exact copy of a former helmet, the red helmets that Buffalo donned during the Super Bowl era would make plenty of sense in the Bills’ final season at Highmark Stadium.

In March of 2025, Pete Guelli, the Chief Operating Officer of the Bills, discussed new uniforms and helmets in an interview with WGR-550’s Sal Capaccio.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of uniform projects, and it doesn’t surprise me anymore how excited people get about that,” Guelli said. “So I think this final year at Highmark is more about optionality. There’s a couple of things, but we want to make sure, ‘What are the combinations that we want to wear?’ and when to strike the right tone with our fans. We are looking at some things relative to that first year, the opening of the stadium. Nothing I can disclose at that point, but I’m invested in the uniforms. It’s a huge important part of our brand. I know how much that resonates with our fans, so it’s something that we’re all focused on.”

Josh Allen has teased alternate helmets in the past during the team’s “Return of the Blue & Red” scrimmages. Allen donned a black helmet in 2024, a blue helmet in 2023 and a red helmet—similar to the Super Bowl era helmets—in 2022.
