Former Nugget on Jonas Valanciunas: 'He's choosing between Mercedes and BMW'

Linas Kleiza, former Nuggets forward and Lithuanian national team GM, said Jonas Valanciunas' future is being decided, comparing his options to choosing between top luxury cars.

The Jonas Valanciunas trade is now official — the veteran center is a member of the Denver Nuggets.

According to Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews, Denver plans to keep Valanciunas on the roster for the 2025–26 season.

Despite strong interest from EuroLeague powerhouse Panathinaikos Athens, the Nuggets have no intention of parting ways with the Lithuanian big man early.

Valanciunas is under contract for one guaranteed year (2025–26), with a non-guaranteed option for the 2026–27 season.

Former Nuggets forward and current Lithuanian national team GM Linas Kleiza was asked whether he influenced Valanciunas' decision.

While supportive, Kleiza admitted the situation is still up in the air.

"Jonas' situation is probably still being decided," Kleiza said. "It's not easy for him with these options. It's like choosing between the best Mercedes and the best BMW. It's not a very difficult choice; they're all good. I just don't know what he really wants or hopes for. It's also unclear how the clubs will work things out."

Kleiza also fondly reflected on his time in Denver, where he played from 2005 to 2009.

"My years in Denver were really good," he said. "Beautiful city, great weather. That was a different stage in my career, but those four years were probably the best I ever had in one place — it was fun."

Jonas Valanciunas speaks out about his future with Nuggets

Valanciunas, meanwhile, was reluctant to talk about his club future as he arrived at the Lithuanian national team camp.

"Can we talk about the national team, thank you," he said when asked about his next move.

Had he been to Denver recently?

"I've been there, played a few times," he replied.

This summer?

"No, I was there in the spring."

So, when will he be certain about his future?

"When I am sure, I'll definitely let you know," Valanciunas said with a smile. "You'll be the first to hear — and I won't even have to say anything."
