David Beckham and Gary Neville’s Salford City FC appoint Manchester City exec to CEO

Salford City FC (SCFC) has named former Manchester City exec Gavin Fleig as its new chief executive.

SCFC was acquired by a new ownership group led by David Beckham and Gary Neville earlier this year, while Fleig, who will take over in Salford on October 1, is currently director of talent management at City parent City Football Group and is a former scouting chief and analyst for the Manchester club.

SCFC said Fleig’s appointment marked a clear signal of the new ownership group’s intent, and he will be responsible for leading the strategic, operational, and commercial direction of the club, with a clear focus on delivering competitive football success, driving promotion up the ranks of English football, and establishing sustainable commercialization models for future growth.

His selection came following an extensive interview process with club co-chairs and ownership group members.

Fleig said: “This club is entering a new chapter with clear determination, and huge untapped potential. We want to build a club that competes fearlessly, first and foremost on the pitch, and extending throughout our business and community efforts to grow in the right way, with our dedicated fanbase at the heart of everything we do.”

SCFC co-chairs Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies said in a statement: “We are thrilled to welcome Gavin Fleig to Salford City Football Club. His proven record of leadership, player development, and shared commitment to success perfectly aligns with our vision for the club. His commitment to driving both competitive football and commercial sustainability will be instrumental as we push towards the next level of growth for SCFC.”

Co-owner Neville added: “Gavin has all the qualities we’ve been looking for – strategic, passionate, and forward-thinking. His belief in the club’s potential aligns perfectly with our own bold vision. We have significant ambitions at Salford City, and with Gavin at the helm, we’re confident we can deliver on them.”

With Fleig’s appointment, current interim CEO Jonathan Jackson will revert back to his former role as chief finance officer at the club.
