The San Francisco 49ers are facing new drama as of Monday morning.
For a team that suffered through a tough 2024 season, missing the playoffs just one year removed from a Super Bowl run, a lot has changed. They lost quite a few key players throughout the course of the NFL offseason.
While quite a few key players who missed time last season due to injury are healthy again, the hits just keep coming. This time, the hit comes from a current key piece of the offense making a demand.
According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, wide receiver Jauan Jennings wants a contract extension. If the 49ers are unwilling to give him that extension, he has made it clear that he wants to be traded.
"49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, per sources," Schefter wrote on X. "49ers extended Jennings’ deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year."
Jennings wants another contract extension just one year after receiving one. That is not the kind of news that San Francisco was hoping to receive to start the week.
During the 2024 NFL season with the 49ers, Jennings played at a very high level. He appeared in 15 games, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns. After that kind of a year, wanting a pay raise from the $7.5 million he's owed in 2025 is understandable, but San Francisco will have a tough decision to make.
Fans quickly jumped into the comments section of Schefter's report to share their opinions on the news.
"Valid ngl. He truly deserves it. Ballin out and making pocket change," one fan said.
Another chimed in, "Not a true off season without 49ers WR contract drama."
"Woah! Are any 49ers WRs happy!?!?" a third comment read.
A fourth fan wrote, "He should get the Darious Slayton deal. 3 for $36."
It will be interesting to see what San Francisco chooses to do with Jennings. His demands have now been made clear and the waiting game begins to find out whether or not the 49ers will give him an extension or look to move him before the regular season arrives.
