Man Utd are looking for more firepower with Fabrizio Romano reporting on a possible transfer hijack for an in-demand striker.
Manchester United’s summer started off promising only to grind to a halt with a tap-in deal almost being blazed over the cross bar.
It looked like things had changed for the better when Mattheus Cunha was announced but the imminent deal for Bryan Mbeumo is now into a second month of negotiations whilst clubs around United continue to strengthen. Above them, both Liverpool and Man City have spent big with Arsenal also adding quality in key positions.
What has Romano said about Man Utd’s interest in Victor Osimhen?
Speaking on his Here We Go podcast released on Sunday 13th of July, transfer supremo Romano explained what United’s position was: “Talking about another saga is about Victor Osimhen and basically his was also saga in 2024. Now also as well in 2025 was the latest with Galatasaray and Napoli. And there is a chance for Man United, many fans are asking this question to hijack the deal potential.
“Look, there was some rumours in the last 24 hours about Manchester United, but I can play these stories down. Basically, what I told is that Manchester United are not even in talks with Osimhen or his agents or people close to the deal because they know that the financial request of Victor Osimhen is very high. He's on 12 million euros net per season at Napoli.
“As a salary, Galatasaray are offering 16 plus add-ons, so Manchester United will never pay that salary. So for sure, the story between Manchester United and Osimhen is not something concrete as of today. What I can tell you on Victor Osimhen is that Galatasaray keep pushing to get this deal done.
“They are now offering 40 million euros guaranteed immediately, plus 35 million add ons. Napoli keep insisting on bank guarantees and also payment terms. Details in their favor for this Victor Osimhen package worth 75 million euros in total, which is the value of the release close.
“So the discussion is ongoing next week. So from tomorrow, Napoli and Galatasaray will keep negotiating for Osimhen. There is a feeling that Galat can really push and try to get it done early next week.”
Who are Man Utd targeting to bring more goals to the forward line?
It’s not yet clear exactly who United are targeting but there are much more affordable options that Victor Osimhen when it comes to both the transfer fee and wages. Moise Kean is a bargain at £45m, however this price tag expires at midnight on the 15th of July.
At an even cheaper £35m, Amorim could land Christopher Nkunku who has seen his name slip further down the pecking order with the impressive arrival of Joao Pedro, a player who United could have done with prioritising over Mbeumo give the respective transfer fees and how long negotiations took for Chelsea to get their man.
Out of the other eye catching strikers on the market or attracting interest, Benjamin Sesko at £75m and Hugo Ekitike at £85m don’t offer value for money either which means that Jason Wilcox and the rest of the recruitment team will have to find a bargain from somewhere.
