Sneer all you want but Newcastle United's key decision makers will certainly be hoping the Magpies are involved in the next Club World Cup after seeing the vast riches on offer for their Premier League rivals this summer.

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently called the competition the 'worst idea ever implemented in football' but ask winners Chelsea how they feel about the newly-revamped tournament and they will likely have a different verdict.

The Blues were crowned champions on Sunday evening, beating Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in New York.

The victory caps off a remarkable summer for Enzo Maresca's side, who are now flush with additional cash to spend despite splashing out on Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao and Liam Delap in recent weeks.

With a $1billion [£774m] prize pot to be shared among all competing teams, it is estimated Chelsea will have banked over £90m in total between their appearance fee and prize money after progressing through the competition.

Maresca's men won six of their seven games in total, losing only to Brazilian outfit Flamengo on their way to the final. Clubs earned £1.5m per group-stage win and £5.5m for reaching the last 16.

An additional £9.7m was dished out for progressing to the quarter-final, while the figure was £15.5m for getting to the semis and £22.2m and £29.5m for the runners-up and winner respectively.

In an era dominated by PSR, where every penny counts, figures of that nature cannot be sniffed at. Even if Chelsea now only have little over one month to recover before their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's finances have significantly improved after three barren windows in recent seasons.

After a £55m outlay for Anthony Elanga, talk has turned to who else the Magpies could splash out on to improve Eddie Howe's starting XI.

An exciting Hugo Ekitike move has been touted, while the push for goalkeeping and defensive reinforcements continue, with Newcastle poised to spend in excess of £100m this summer.
