Everton have been eyeing a move for Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg this summer.
The 18-year-old helped Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League last season and has been backed to become one of the best midfielders in England.
Everton were first linked with Rigg earlier this year, but following the Mackems’ successful end to the season, the Toffees’ new rivals may be unwilling to send their young asset.
The transfer saga has now taken another twist, as David Moyes’ side look to accelerate their summer plans.

Rigg would prefer to stay at Sunderland this summer
Rigg has attracted interest from plenty of sides across Europe this summer.
MORE TOFFEES STORIES
Sunderland have so far had a strong start to the transfer window and may now have to sell after splashing the cash.
However, Rigg – hailed as “absolutely brilliant” by team-mate Dan Neil – would prefer to stay on Wearside this summer, according to The Express (14 July).
It is reported that Sunderland have intervened by holding talks over extending Rigg’s contract, amid interest not only from Everton but also West Ham United.

Rigg has had an excellent start to his career
In late April, it was said that both Everton and Arsenal were pursuing Rigg as they looked to secure his signature this summer.
Rumours have been rumbling on about potential exits, but Sunderland continue to make new signings as they look to avoid the drop next season.

Everton should turn their heads elsewhere
Everton now know there they stand with Rigg almost certain to stay at Sunderland this season, so they must turn their attention elsewhere.
Moyes’ side must add more depth in the midfield, having lost Abdoulaye Doucoure this summer, and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney would be the perfect alternative.
The youngster has been playing regular football in the North East for the last three seasons and has attracted interest from across Europe.
His progressive style of play would allow Everton to link up nicely between their defence and attack.
