The San Antonio Spurs can breathe easier now regarding Victor Wembanyama’s health. The French superstar is now cleared to return to the court after a blood clot in his shoulder cut short his 2024-25 season after 46 games.
The first overall pick of the 2023 draft had to be shut down in February after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The diagnosis came shortly after he played in his first All-Star game.
“I’m officially cleared to return. It just happened — I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just a few hours ago (last Friday). Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again!” Wembanyama told Maxime Aubin of L’Equipe.

Wembanyama was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists and an NBA-leading 3.8 blocks per game before being sidelined. Without their 7-foot-3 center, the Spurs finished 34-48 and 13th in the Western Conference standings.
With Wemby cleared and back in the fold, the Spurs should compete for a playoff spot this upcoming season. They selected Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick in last month’s draft, and along with Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, San Antonio will boast one of the best young teams in the league.
